50th Anniversary Banquet

On Thursday, September 30, 2010 Midland Christian School celebrated 50 years of providing an excellent Christian education to the Midland area.  “It is a credit to God’s faithfulness in providing for us over the years” said Administrator Eric VanDerhoof.

MCS opened in September 1960 at the Church of the Brethren with Marie Kroon as teacher and principal for the 17 students from kindergarten through third grades. The school was housed several other places before moving to its current location on Wackerly Road in 1972.  There the school used two portable classrooms prior to construction of the current facility.

The 50th anniversary celebration was held at the Holiday Inn in Midland.  There alumni, teachers (past and present), friends and families gathered to remember the past.  The event was also a fundraiser and guests were asked to consider the school’s future.  Mr. VanDerhoof asked participants to share in the school’s vision by becoming financial partners. The event raised approximatley $16,000 for the school.

Attendees included Bill and Lorna Vanderkooi of Midland, one of four couples who founded the school. The Vanderkoois were honored for their service with a plaque, flowers and gift.  The couple still regularly volunteers at the school.  Lorna volunteers as our librarian, organizing, acquiring books and conducting a reading time.  Bill serves as Treasrurer on the MCS Association board and has become a self-taught IT wizard by managing the schools IT infrastructure

Also attending were a former kindergarten and music teacher Heather Bourdon who also graduated from Midland Christian School in the 1990s, Jean Langrill, who served as the school’s secondary science teacher for about 20 years, and Jayme Hazen the current bookkeeper and former MCS graduate.

We are looking forward to another 50 years!
