Crusaders win tournament opener
Midland Daily News (MI)-March 6, 2010
Bobby
Cockrell and Matt VanDerhoof both had big games to lead host Midland Christian
over Skeels Christian 46-36 in the opener of the Association of Christian
Schools International boys' basketball tournament Friday. Cockrell
had 19 points and 12 rebounds, while VanDerhoof had 12 points, 10 rebounds,
eight assists, and eight steals. Garret Ranck added six steals. The
Crusaders led 19-16 at the half. Midland
Christian coach Clarence Campbell was happy with the defensive effort his team
showed.
"Defensively, we did very well," Campbell said. "They had two guys that
scored a lot of points, but they were the only two doing any
scoring." Skeels was
led by Jordan Husted with 17 points and Dalton Thomas with 14 points. Midland
Christian (9-9 overall) plays New Covenant Christian at 10:30 a.m. today in the
tournament semifinals. "We
don't know much about New Covenant," Campbell
said. "But we do know that they have two very good 3-point shooters, so
we'll have to play good on-the-ball and off-the-ball defense." Barry County
beat Cadillac Heritage 59-31 Friday. Barry Country plays No. 1 Portage at 9
a.m.
