MIDLAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Athletics Policies

PURPOSE/PHILOSOPHY

Athletics is an integral part of the total education program at Midland Christian School.  In conjunction with our school mission statement which is to provide an educational environment for academic, physical, spiritual, and social growth, our school athletes should be enriched in all areas through competition and cooperation in sports.

The development of physical skills is important, but sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, loyalty, tolerance and perseverance are also desired outcomes for each individual.

We should pattern our life after Jesus Christ and the instruction given in God's Word.  The apostle Paul admonished us "whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus."    Colossians 3:17

ASSOCIATIONS

MCS will maintain membership in the Bay Area Christian Conference and will follow their guidelines.  MCS will seek to abide by Michigan High School Athletic Association (M.H.S.A.A.) guidelines.

ELIGIBILITY

Students must pass a physical examination before they will be allowed to practice with their athletic teams.  This should be taken care of by parents during the summer, but no earlier than April 15th  to be valid for the next school year.  Please arrange to obtain the necessary health form from the MCS AD or office.  The completed and signed medical examination form must be on file in the school AD's office.  Parents should be prepared to cover all medical costs arising from athletic and other school-related injuries.

Athletes must maintain a 2.0 grade point average in at least five courses per semester (four courses for co-op/working seniors).  Grades are checked every two weeks.  Athletes, including incoming transfer students, must have a 2.0 grade point average in coursework for the previous semester.  If a student has a grade point average below 2.0 at the end of the semester, he/she will be ineligible for participation in any interscholastic sports for the succeeding semester.

An athlete who turns 19 before September 1st is ineligible for athletic competition.

A non-refundable annual athletic fee is to be paid for each student prior to the first game.  Uniforms will not be issued until this fee is paid.

The following forms must be signed and on file in the school Athletic Director’s office prior to practice:

ATHLETE/STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Participation in the athletic program is voluntary but carries with it certain responsibilities which are obligatory.  All athletes are expected to behave in a manner which will bring honor and respect to the school and team they represent.  Maximum individual effort can be encouraged if the athlete has a balanced diet, proper rest, and a positive mental attitude.  Training rules have been developed to assist athletes and help guide their behavior, and they are to be observed all 365 days of the year.

ACADEMIC CREDIT

High school interscholastic sports and cheer leading are worth 2.5 credits per sport per year, not graded.  Students may apply 5 credits of interscholastic sports toward graduation credits.
